Windows 10 for phones preview installed

Cool – finally windows 10 for phones is available 🙂
At the moment it is only available for a limited number of devices

  • Lumia 630
  • Lumia 635
  • Lumia 636
  • Lumia 638
  • Lumia 730
  • Lumia 830

Good thing is, I have many windows phones. 🙂

My Lumia 1520, which is my „main device“, a Lumia 925 which I got from Unity for game development and….a Lumia 630, which I use as a low end testing device.

First I installed the „Windows Insider“ app, which is required to get windows 10 for phones (in contrast getting preview versions of windows phone 8.1 was possible by using the „preview for developers“ app).

This windows 10 for phones „preview version“ is expected to be more unstable then the windows phone 8.1 developer preview versions so install it at your own risk and better not on your „main device“. 🙂

So my Lumia 630 will be sacrificed to the „preview version gods“. 🙂

First test after the installation: My app Week View is still running – yess!!
It is written in Silverlight 8.1 since WinRT at the moment has some limitations, which hopefully will be resolved in the first public API for windows phone 10.
This in general means: Apps based on Silverlight will still run on windows phone 10, at least that’s how it is in the preview version.

The calendar app is still the same as in windows phone 8.1, so it’s not the one that was shown by Microsoft at their windows 10 preview converence. I expect this new calendar app will be included in a future update.

Aaaaand one major change: Now we have „huge“ live tiles – the people app and cortana already supports this new live tile format while the other apps I tested to not.
This makes windows phone consistend with windows „on the desktop“ – both now support the same live tile sizes.

    Hallo Hannes,

    Danke für Deinen Beitrag zum WP-10 Prewiew!

    Auf dem sechsten screenshot (mit der Tastatur) ist mir ein blauer Punkt aufgefallen. Unterhalb vom „y“& „x“. Weisst Du wofür dieser Punkt/ diese Taste da sein soll?

      Hallo Stefan,

      mit diesem Punkt kann man den Cursor bewegen, wenn man sich in einem Eingabefeld für Text befindet.
      Damit kann man den Cursor auch einfach und genau z.B. in die Mitte eines Wortes positionieren.
      Davor war das auch möglich, indem man die Stelle selektiert („angeklickt“) hat. Das funktionierte (zumindest bei mir) meist aber nicht so gut – entweder war der Cursor nicht genau an der gewünschten Stelle und beim 2. Selektieren wurde das gesamte Wort ausgewählt. Mit dieser Steuerung funktioniert das nun viel genauer.
      Sobald man den Punkt berührt und den Finger nach links/rechts/oben/unten bewegt erscheint an dieser Stelle auch ein Pfeil und der Cursor bewegt sich langsam in die gewünschte Richtung.

        das ist doch schon fast das Beste an dem neuen System :-).

        Das mit dem Kalender ist doch von MS-Seite ernüchternd, ich freue mich das ich WeekView nutze…

          Ja, mal schaun, ist ja noch eine frühe Previews und ich denke, dass sich noch einiges ändern wird.
          Viel Spaß beim Fasching feiern – geht bei mir auch heute Abend los. 🙂
